The League of American Bicyclists has been working for better cycling in America since 1881. It does so by promoting bicycling and educating both cyclists and motorists. Its Bicycle Friendly America program provides incentives, hand-on assistance, and award recognition for communities, universities and businesses that actively support bicycling. The League also ranks states annually based upon their level of bike-friendliness. The League’s Safe Routes to Schools program provides assistance in developing safe routes for children to walk or bike to school. For more than half a century, the League has promoted National Bike Month during May. The League represents the interests of the nation’s 57 million cyclists. It does so through a current membership of 300,000 affiliated cyclists, including 25,000 individuals and 700 affiliated organizations.
