About Ciclovía
Ciclovía is a temporary urban space in which a circuit of streets is open up for citizens to interact with each other through exercise, entertainment and fun: bicyclists, walkers, runners, artist and children all enjoyed selective streets of downtown Roanoke all traffic-free.

During Ciclovía, Roanoke Citizens have the opportunity to get out in the streets and try different physical activities with their families, like, aerobics, hula hooping, or just relax, shop/dine in downtown, sit by the market street and enjoy the day.

A remarkable first Ciclovía was held on Saturday August 1st, 2009. Over 500 people filled the streets of Downtown Roanoke. Ciclovía offeed 4 hours of non-stop aerobic classes, free massages, hula hoops, bicycle repair/rental station, kids activities, outdoor sitting in the market street and beautiful mixed of families playing in the streets.

The circuit includes 1 mile of streets in Downtown Roanoke, surrounding the Market Area. Access to ALL parking garages will be open so those who drive downtown for the event can find easy access to parking.

Roanoke first Ciclovía in 2009, drew very positive attention of City officials and residents, who have requested having more frequent Ciclovías. The event was covered by the media, featuring on the Extra Section of the Roanoke Times, WVTF/Morning edition show form NPR, WBDJ News Channel 7, WSLS Channel 10, Roanoke Free Press, and Streetsblog New York City.

Ciclovía is funded through sponsorship and in kind donations. In 2009 our sponsors included, RIDE Solutions, Spectrum Design, Roanoke Public Libraries and BikeWalk Virginia. This year The Parks and Recreation Department is contributing with the insurance and permit costs, plus assistance and staff expertise in how to run the program.
